==================
In the Civil War period this branch remained staunch Royalists.
Col. Francis was killed in the porch of St Leonard’s Church leading
the defence of the Town. A plaque records the event.
His son Mjr. Francis was captured at the battle of Stow.
A plaque in St Calixus Church records the names of his children.
Most disappear from English records and are to be found serving
with Prince Rupert in Ireland where records are scarce.
Following the Royalist defeat Astley Abbotts was seized – with the
surviving members of the family moving to London
and the Midlands.

Note.
Following Cromwell’s success Royalist officers were refused
permission to apply for transfers to Parliamentary Reg.s . They were
given land grants in Ireland. Officers given grants were :- Francis Mjr.
Edward Mjr. Edward Lt. Henry Es. John Lt. Lewis. Rupert Lt.
and Samuel. ( ? sons & g.sons of Mjr. Francis of Astley Abbots.)
However Lt. Col. Edward was appointed Pay Master in Dublin until
he retired to return to London
The name continues to appear with officers serving with the
Prince in his naval period but most records are missing.
A Rupert served 1667 – 1671 as Lt. in the West Indian Hussars and is presumable the Captain of Marines who refused to leave his men when
The Prince and other officers were transferred from the flagship
“ Constant Refomation “ when she founded off the Azores.
( Treasury Vol.12 pp32 & 382 – 418.)
The name appears later as witnesses to wills in Antigua so presumably he
had married there.
‘ R.’ Line
==================
Roger surrendered his holdings in Hallon to his brother
Stephen – the family moving to Coventry - Canterbury
and London. They were mostly Drapers and Haberdashers
and appear as Arms holders in H. Soc. records.
( London 69- p. 1 – 65.)
Henry was appointed ‘ Collector of the Queens Customs for
The City of London. ‘ He was very efficient and became a
valued member of her company. Following her success in
Ireland she determined to replace the ‘ common land ‘ with
manorial estates in order to produce an income.
She divided the country into ten parts – giving them to her
staff to sell as Manorial Estates. Henry was given Kilkenny
which he passed to his sons Henry and Thomas.
The young Henry entered the company of STRAFFORD the
Earl of Middlesex to command his Irish troops that took part
In the investment of the Tower of London but failed to release
The Earl of Middlesex from Parliamentary confinement.
He was arrested but gave evidence on his co-accused - being
rewarded with the rank of Mjr. in Iretons Reg. at the battle of
Naseby. ( A Sgt. called him a ‘wretch.’)
He married five times – abandoning each family as he started
the next. His father gave him Penhow Castle for his first – a
manor house with a defensive tower (still occupied) All the
children suffered from a degree of intellectual handicap. One
daughter used the deeds as a dowery.
His second to Abigail THOMSON in Holland is described in a
report to his bro-in-law John QUARLES by his agent KEMP.
( Richard THOMSON was a senior trader in Middleburg.- with
a Dutch wife and Richard (Dutch) (Author). Emmanuel (Killed
at Surabaya.) Thomas / Abigail / Freida.)
Henry was confined for debt in Stadt but Thomas T. “stood for
him “ to enable him to return to London to take up the position
of H.E.I.C. post master. ( However he was arrested and held in
Prison at Marshalsea until released by an Act of Parliament.)
He was later imprisoned for debt in The Fleet.
Henry’s father gave him a second estate at Siston when he
married to Lady Susan but with no assets he did not leave a will
and Siston was taken by STRATFORD as a debt due.

Luke POTTER of Oxford and other English researchers doubt the accuracy
of the claim in DAVIE’s book “ The BILLINGSLEY family in America “ that
the migrants were from the Shropshire branch.
My research reinforces that finding. They were the most loyal of Royalists
serving in England, Ireland and at sea .
The London branch however were in frequent contact with Europe as
merchant traders.
The marriage of Henry to Abigail THOMSON is well recorded and in her and
her sister Fiona’s claims for compensation on the death of their brother
Emmanuel in the “ Massacre of Surabaya” by the Dutch – she includes her
Husband and sons. Unfortunately she does not name them – but they would
be of age and being abandoned by their father when he returned to England
( it was his custom to abandon the children of his marriages in sequence.)
presumably they were brought up as protestants by the THOMSON family.
Further research in Europe is needed to confirm or refute this.
